Alyza Jehangir
Director of Programs
Alyza first came to realize the impact media had on self-esteem in the
1990s. Frustrated that she couldn't get her hair to look like Najia (a
supermodel)'s, she asked her older sister's advice. The reply -- that
she never could have that sleek hair because most models were white and
she was not -- was confirmed by the fact that she found no "recommended"
hairstyles for girls with thick hair in magazines.
Alyza more formally learned about the social constructions of beauty and
its political implications on women while earning her B. A. in Sociology
from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Post-graduation, she headed
west to San Francisco. In the spring of 2003, Alyza joined her
About-Face sisters in the quest to educate women and girls about the
relationship between media and self-esteem.
Today, as About-Face's Director of Programs, Alyza brings her knowledge
and passion for women's rights, her neverending enthusiasm for
brainstorming sessions, and her killer organization skills to her work
in developing, implementing, and managing About-Face's Education into
Action program. When she's not working, you'll find her planning theme
parties, cooking for her friends, or watching her favorite woman-loving
television show, The Golden Girls.
